Spare the Rod, But Not the Consequence
By: Gary Direnfeld, MSW - gary123@sympatico.ca
Gary Direnfeld is a Child Behaviour Expert and Social Worker
Frustrated parents of young children are spanking because they may know other ways to get their children to mind their words. However, there is more than enough research to show that spanking often creates new problems. Children who are spanked tend to be more aggressive in the playground and tend to have less developed problem-solving skills. Their self-esteem tends to be lower and they harbour feelings of wanting to get back at those who do the spanking - resentment and vengeance. As a result of spanking the child's attention is focused on the parent's hitting behaviour and less on their own behaviour that led to the spanking in the first place.
