Twenty Steps to NAFCC Accreditation Footpath Footnotes


WCCIP has taken a step-by-step approach to the NAFCC Accreditation process.  The following "Twenty Steps" is a guide for family child care providers and can be used along with our "Path to Accreditation Poster" as an interactive tool to stay on task while participating in enhancing quality.

  1. Requested an NAFCC application packet.

        Packet includes:
            ____ Cover Letter    
            ____ Procedures for Accreditation
            ____ Membership Application
            ____ Checklist of Provider Materials
            ____ Licensing Consent Form
            ____ 2-page Application
                (may download from website)

  2. Sent completed forms with fees to NAFCC. This includes: 
    ____ Application Form Licensing Consent Form (May access from website or call NAFCC to request form) 
    ____ $25.00 Membership Fee (one check is fine for both fees) 
    ____ $247.50 Accreditation Fee

  3. Received the Self-Study Packet. This includes: ____ Quality Standards Peach Book 
    ____ Observer Request Form 
    ____ Sample of a Parent Survey 
    ____ Checklist of Provider Materials 
    ____ Accreditation Guide Book 
    ____ Physical Exam/TB Test Form 
    ____ Cover Letter 
    ____ Mandatory Criminal History Check 
    ____ Health & Safety Information 
    ____ Training Record 
    ____ Complete/Incomplete Application Letter

  4. Reviewed the Self-Study Packet. Provider looks through all materials to develop an understanding of them.

  5. Presented Accreditation to parents. Provider may wish to: 
    ____ Review handout entitled "Ten Reasons Why Family Child Care Providers Like Accreditation" 
    ____ Visit www.nafcc.org for NAFCC Accreditation Brochure

  6. Established a timeline. Provider sets goals, develops steps to implement goals, and sets dates to accomplish each step.

  7. Did an initial assessment of the program using the Quality Standards Peach Book. Provider rates each standard as Fully Met, Partially Met or Not Met.

  8. I'm implementing and completing my plan for improvements. Provider makes necessary changes so each standard will be fully met.

  9. Requested an Observer Visit. Request includes: ____Request for Observer Form I
    ____ tems from the Checklist of Provider Materials (#4 through #13) 
    ____ Copy of License 
    ____ TB test for provider and any co-providers 
    ____ Physical exam for provider and any co-providers (within 2 years) 
    ____ Current CPR & First Aid 
    ____ Clearance from Licensor (any complaints or violations-give details and outcome) 
    ____ Criminal Record Check within the last year 
    ____ Documentation of training hours (write up in  form style listing the training and number of hours in order taken. NAFCC will accept a WI Registry Certificate or current CDA Certificate and then documentation of training is not necessary.) 
    ____ Second Payment ($247.50) is due.

  10. Received my Self-Observation Packet. This includes: 
    ____ Provider Self-Observation Workbook
     ____ Observation Checklist 
    ____ Parent Surveys 
    ____ Return Envelope 
    ____ Conflict of Interest Affidavit 
    ____ Provider Letter 
    ____ Provider's Evaluation of Observer Form
    ____ Instructions for completing the Provider Self-Observation 

  11. NAFCC has assigned my Observer. Observer contacts Provider to set up Observer Visit.

  12. Distributed and collected the Parent Surveys. At least 80% or 4 out of every 5 family surveys must be returned in a sealed envelope.

  13. My Observer Visit is scheduled for: _______________________________ 
    Observer contacts Provider and together an observation date is set.

  14. Arranged for the children's supervision during Interview. Observer stays until children are down for nap, must leave for one full hour, begins interview upon return and stays until complete. Provider should expect supervision of children to extend beyond naptime.

  15. Completed the Provider Self-Observation Workbook Before Observer Visit (including Section 8). Provider will be sending this Workbook to NAFCC in step #17.

  16. Had my Observer Visit and completed the Provider Evaluation of Observer Form; signed the Conflict of Interest Affidavit and signed the Observer Payment Request Form. (Provided by the observer). Provider will be sending these forms to NAFCC in step #17.

  17. Sent in my Self-Observation Packet. 
    ____ Completed Provider Self-Observation Workbook 
    ____ Signed Conflict of Interest Affidavit
    ____ Provider's Evaluation of Observer Form
    ____ Completed Parent Surveys

  18. NAFCC notified me that materials were received and complete. Provider will receive written verification by mail or phone.

  19. NAFCC reviews my materials and makes decision. Within 2 - 3 months the provider will receive the decision by mail.

  20. SUCCESS! Provider celebrates the Accreditation achievement with the families they serve.
